Bai Nian Niang Dou Foo 百年酿豆腐 is easily one of the most popular hawker stalls with the longest queue at Albert Food Centre.
Well, it used to be semi-well-known, but line wasn’t this long.
Well, its fames was largely to food bloggers and instagrammers who raved about this ‘hidden’ place a few years back.
I have supported this Yong Tau Foo since the ‘good-old-days’ when it had outlets at People’s Park Food Complex and Albert Food Centre, and enjoyed the simplicity and quality of the pieces.
Now, it has a couple of branches in Singapore (from Viva Changi Business Park, Yishun, to Clementi), and perhaps standard has not been as consistent as before. (The 2nd generation owners also opened a eatery called Nic & Tom at Serangoon Garden, which was previously known as “Fu Er Dai” – not that best name for a restaurant if you asked.)
There are a number of online reviews on the increase in pricing, but I guess that is inevitable with the expansion.
Unless most other Yong Tau Foo stalls where you can pick ingredients to your liking, the bowl here ($4.90 – 5.90) comes with fixed choices from bitter gourd, prawn paste, pork paste, beancurd, and a combination of “gold, white and black” rolls.
The ‘white’ stands for fish, ‘black’ for pork, and ‘gold’ combination of prawn and pork.
Note that it is only available with bee hoon, so you cannot choose other carbs such as noodles or kway teow.
My favourite item is the prawn paste pieces (like prawn balls), which have that sweet taste and succulent bite.
There is a certain element of freshness and bounciness that made the two pieces very appealing.
Also a favourite is the bittergourd meatball, which is braised with pork then lightly deep-fried.
Surprisingly, you won’t find that strong bitter taste in the piece.
What draws customers would be its clean-tasting clear soup that is both light and flavourful, cooked with soya bean and anchovies, and said not to contain added MSG.
I also enjoyed that there is quite a handful of fresh chopped spring onions added, which helps cut the richness and greasiness (if any) of the soup.
