It is not that common to find indie “hipster cafes” in Woodlands, with most options in the North being the chain coffee stores.
Plus (prior 2020), there are cafe hoppers who do head over to cafes in Johor Bahru just across the Johor-Singapore Causeway.
I made my way to Woodlands Square, or known as Woods Square, is the newest integrated development of offices, retail and F&Bs right next to Causeway Point.
Some popular F&B brands to be found there includes Milksha (Suntec City), Pho Street, Soup Spoon and Takagi Ramen.
The newest addition to Woods Square is Sowl Coffee, a 12 seaters coffee bar offering Coffee ($3 – $5.50), Tea ($4), Chocolate ($4.50) and Pastries ($3 – $3.50).
Sowl, pronounced as “sour” is a synonym to what most people perceive coffee due to its acidity.
Here at Sowl Coffee, one will find their owl ‘mascot’ on their walls, which is derived from their brand’s name – Sowl.
Using a 2-beans-blend of Brazil and Colombia roasted by Six Four Coffee, only espresso-based drinks such as Espresso ($3), Black ($4.50), White ($5.50) and Mocha ($5.50) are served.
My cup of Flat White ($5) was quite smooth with a light body, and earthy notes.
A single shot of espresso is used for my cup of Flat White, which turned out to be a tad milky, with a slight astringency in the aftertaste that may not be suitable for everyone.
Pastries such as Plain Croissant ($3), Pain au Chocolat ($4) and Muffin ($3) are reasonably priced to complement with their coffee.
I had the Plain Croissant ($3) which was heated up before serving and was decent with a crispy and flaky texture.
Sowl Coffee is a nice addition to the Woodlands community due to the lack of specialty cafes in the North, hopefully they will serve more coffee blends to cater to different crowd In the future.
