Starting the new year with another ice cream cafe, this time round in Ang Mo Kio, next to Mayflower Market and Food Centre. (Also read: 20 NEW Ice Cream & Waffles Cafes In Singapore)
There had been quite a few changes to the cafe scene at Ang Mo Kio lately, which includes the new addition of AMPM Café and the departure of OCD Cafe to Jalan Besar.
Desert Dessert means 2 different things even though their spelling is quite similar, the former refers to a barren and dry landscape, and the latter refers to sweet treats.
The 32 seater-space at Desert Desserts has a MUJI-style layout, decked in wooden benches and white table tops.
Stepping inside, the most eye-catching part of the deco is their colourful stools, that look like scoops of gelato, placed at every table.
Their menu is quite extensive for a Gelato Cafe, ranging from Gelato (Single $3.60/ Double $6.60) to Waffles ($5.50), Bingsu ($9.50 – $11.50), Specialty Shakes ($5.50 – $6), Global Flavour Local Twist drinks ($5.50 – $6.50), Boba Milk ($3.50 – $4), Coffee ($3 – $6) and Ice Blended ($7.50).
Even though there are only 10 Gelato flavours to choose from, which is quite limited for a gelato cafe, the gelatos here are considered vibrant and colourful in terms of appearance.
Flavours range from Classic (Single $3.60/ Double $6.60) Matcha, Coconut, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry, Earl Grey, Butterscotch Caramel and Raspberry to Premium ones (additional $1) such as Chocolate, Sea Salt and Mango Passion.
Gelato Cone is available at an additional $1 and these gelatos are available for takeaway in 350ml pint tubs (Classic $12.50, Premium $16) too.
I had the Waffles with Double Scoops of Gelato ($11.50, additional $1 for premium flavour).
The Buttermilk waffles has a crispy and crunchy outer layer with a fluffy, airy texture on the inside.
Drizzled with maple syrup and sprinkled with icing sugar, the waffle is aromatic with vanilla and buttermilk fragrance that most waffle lovers will enjoy.
Among the 2 flavours: Raspberry and Sea Salt, I preferred the latter with hints of salt to cut through the sweeter milk-based gelato.
The Raspberry gelato comes with swirls of pink, like a paddle pop, with bits of raspberry fruits added for a more chewy bite.
More than just gelato and waffles, Desert Dessert offers a wide selection of beverages such as Shakes: Yuzu Freeze Berry, ($5.50), Lychee Rose Berry ($5.50), Mango Freeze Garden ($5.50), Passion Breeze Garden ($6) and Strawberry Peach Berry ($6) with additional toppings: Cheese Cream ($1) and Pop Balls – Strawberry, Mango, Crystal Ball ($0.80).
Their Mango Sticky Rice ($6.50) caught my attention, which is a drink instead of a dessert.
It comes beautifully layered with mango puree at the bottom, pandan extract and topped with fresh milk without any real sticky rice in it.
Unfortunately, the combination tasted weird with sweetness from the pandan extract and sourness from the mango puree.
The Lychee Rose Latte (Cold $6) was the better drink – a shot of espresso was added to fresh milk with distinctive hints of rose flavour in it.
Even though the lychee wasn’t as distinct as I expected, the overall taste was well balanced.
Desert Dessert will probably be a popular supper spot for the residents in Ang Mo Kio since they are opened till midnight on weekends.
