Is that a Mt Fuji in my Swiss roll?

Located along the same stretch of units as Gelato Labo at Cavan Road (Jalan Besar), Sweets Craftsman is a new dessert cafe that focuses on artisanal bakes and pastries.

With more than a decade of experience in the confectionery industry and has previously worked at Raffles Hotel and TCC, the pastry chef has decided to open his very own bakery cafe in Jalan Besar.

The simple 4-seater cafe has a minimalist interior, equipped with small tables, chairs and potted plants (with Taiwanese café vibes).

Served mainly as a takeaway shop, the menu features Swiss Roll ($7.80), Meringue Rolls (Summer Berries $6, Yuzu Orange $6.80), Cakes ($6.80), Tarts (Strawberry, Blueberry $6.80), Croissants (Butter $3, Almond $4), Madeleine ($2.80) and Brownie (Sea salt $3.50, Pecan $3.50).

All the Swiss roll were so kawaii, crafted with a Mt. Fuji in the middle with different flavours such as Matcha, Tie Guan Yin and Chocolate Raspberry.

As the Swiss rolls are all Japanese inspired, and thus tend to be on the lighter side in terms of texture and flavour.

As a matchaholic myself, the Matcha Fujiro ($7.80) was definitely something that I would order from their menu.

The Matcha Fujiro came with a matcha sponge cake encasing matcha, strawberry and whipping cream within.

The highlight is the shape of Mt Fuji in the centre of the Swiss roll.

However, I might have preferred a stronger matcha taste overall.

One good thing was that the cake was overall not too sweet, so that you can actually taste all the individual components from the subtle strawberries to the slight bitterness of the matcha.

Perhaps sprinkling some matcha power by the side will further enhance and elevate the aroma and flavour.

Similarly, the Tieguanyin Fujiro ($7.80) came with tea-infused cream and whipping cream wrapped within.

The Chinese oolong tea flavour was also on the lighter side, with subtle fragrance.

Surprisingly, the Summer Berries Meringue ($6) was my favourite with a strong bright aftertaste.

Pieced together with layers of meringue and ice cream-like whipping cream when served frozen, there was a burst of flavour from the berries embedded within.

The sponge was light and sweetened with almond nuts, giving an earthy and nutty sensation.

There was also a nice contrast in textures between the moist meringue layers and the frozen whipping cream.

Apart from Swiss Roll ($7.80) and Meringue Rolls ($6 – $6.80), Tarts ($6.80) in 2 different flavours: Strawberry and Blueberry are available.

The Blueberry Tart had the same components as the Matcha Fujiro, layered with strawberry cream and matcha sponge cake beneath to create more textures and topped with blueberries for a fruittier punch.

The tart curst was decently crumbly and could do with a more buttery fragrance to bring out the aroma.

Sweets Craftsman does have the potential to be a popular dessert spot in the area with some tweaking in flavours, given their creations are pretty-dainty and innovative.
