Situated at The Yards in Joo Chiat which is a space focusing on arts, dance and drama, The Brewing Ground is the latest addition to the compound, just a stone throw away from Cafe De Nicole’s Flower and Sundays Ice Cream. One more to the East Coast Plan.
Previously, this was a sheltered training shed and it is now transformed into a gorgeous “glasshouse” filled with hanging plants and potteries.
It can sit 50 pax at its maximum capacity.
Opened by the folks behind Mischief at Esplanade Mall, Breakfast ($4 – $18++), Sweets ($11 – $14++) and Sides ($10 – $14++) are available from opening till 4pm whereas for Brunch ($19 – $25++), Salads ($15 – $18++) and Mains ($15 – $25++) starts from 11am till 4pm.
Their Breakfast menu features classic options such as Homemade Granola ($12++), Avocado & Ricotta Tartine ($17++), Burrata & Tomatoes Tartine ($18++) and Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($12++).
Their Brunch selection looks more interesting such as Breakfast Burger ($19++), Crab & Signature Scrambled Eggs on Toast ($24++), Not an Eggs Benedict ($21++) and Brewers Breakfast ($25++).
Unfortunately, it was only available from 11am onwards (which seems a tad late for brunch?)
I had the Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($12++) with optional add-on of Smoked Salmon and Thick Cut Maple Bacon (+$5++) that comes with 3 different types of cheeses: Gruyere, Comte and Parmesan, with mesclun salad served by the side.
The Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($12++) was served like a Cuban sandwich, stuffed with the 3 cheeses and shredded smoked salmon before grilling to give it a golden-brown shade and crispy on the edges.
The sandwich was well grilled with a crispy and crunchy texture in contrast to the soft, melted gooey cheese but the smoked salmon added could be a little too salty for my liking.
Perhaps by serving something spicy by the side will help to cut through the saltiness and greasiness.
3 desserts are available on their menu, namely Dark Chocolate Lava Cake ($14++), Buttermilk Waffle & Ice Cream ($11++) and Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookie ($12++).
I had the Buttermilk Waffle & Ice Cream ($11++) that came with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream, strawberries, blueberries and almond crumble.
Even though the texture was quite good, with a very crispy crunch on the outside and light and airy on the inside, the waffle was unfortunately burnt and resulted in a lingering bitterness in every bite.
The usual suspects could be found on their coffee menu such as Piccolo ($5++), Macchiato ($4.50++), Black ($4.50++), White ($5++), Filter ($7.50++) and Mocha ($6.50++) whereas Tea ($5.50++) comes in flavours such as Melon Green Tea, Earl Grey, Chamomile, Morrocan Mint and English Breakfast.
Using a single origin from Brazil roasted by 2 Degrees North Coffee Co., my cup of White ($5.50++) was medium bodied, and also slightly burnt with an acidic tone.
Hopefully, The Brewing Ground will be able to sort out their operation kinks and improve on their food and drinks, given that the space is really pretty and a perfect spot for brunch.
